About this Volume
Synopsistop
What is in it?
Volumes in The Guidepost contain very much the same elements as conventional books: title pages, contents lists, headings, text, tables, diagrams, photographs, and so on. There are many similarities with the way a printed book is prepared, structured and built, but there are also significant differences. This Volume will describe the approach to producing a new Volume, the principles that are the basis of this approach, the processes to be followed in producing the new Volume, and how The Guidepost Toolkit supports them.
Writing a new Volume has four Core Processes:
- Develop the narrative skeleton
- Design the structure
- Produce the Content
- Build the Volume
which this Volume describes in detail. The same processes are followed if an existing Volume is to be revised or adapted.
Who is it for?
Initially we started work on this Volume for ourselves, to capture what we had learned while producing our first Volume - Bids and Projects, and to help us check the consistency, effectiveness, clarity, and completeness of our approach. However we realised quite quickly that we should be aiming at a wider audience, for example our Resellers, new authors, and those of our Customers who want to understand what is involved, before deciding to develop their own material.
By opening the Volume to a wider range of readers, we were obliged to review many of our assumptions, and to feed our conclusions back into the Volume. We believe that this has led us to learn and understand more about how we work, to improve our own approach, and (in due course) to publish a better Volume.
