The two types of Product

This shows the decomposition of what a Bid or a Project has to develop and deliver. The breakdown will be firstly into composite Products, and then individual ones. There will be two types:

  • the Specialist Products to be delivered to the End User or Customer
  • the Management Products needed to run the Bid or Project.

The form of a Product Breakdown Structure

Generally the Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) will take the form of a table, a spreadsheet, or a block diagram, showing the Product Breakdown in the form of a tree-structure. Product Based Planning is The Guidepost's key technique for planning a Bid or Project. A PBS will have several levels (e.g. Project, Phase/Stage, Workpackage), which reflect the structure of the emerging Project Plan. Each level of a PBS will be produced, extended, and (if necessary) revised as the planning of a Bid or Project proceeds.

Products for Delivery

Products for Delivery to an End User or a Customer will almost always be Specialist Products rather than Management Products.
